Abstract Portraits
In 1994 Maureen Quin showed, through a series of portraits of African Women, the passage of Abstraction resulting in “Xhosa Woman”, “Anxiety” and “Angst”. Realism is parred down to a geometrically abstracted, skeletal depiction, symbolizing the perceived emotional state sensed on the portrait of the “Xhosa Woman”.
